Why We Use Ripstop in Our Winter Jackets
26 January 2026
To ensure your winter riding coat lasts season after season, Uhip uses ripstop fabric – a smart weaving technique that effectively prevents tears and makes your riding jacket or riding coat exceptionally durable without compromising flexibility. Here are our three top collections where we’ve maximised performance using ripstop technology.

What is ripstop?
Ripstop is a technical weaving method used to increase the durability of a fabric, even in materials that are extremely thin and lightweight. What characterises ripstop is its distinctive grid pattern, created by weaving thicker, reinforced threads into the fabric at regular intervals.
This structure allows a riding jacket or winter riding coat to maintain a low weight and high freedom of movement, without compromising the mechanical strength required in a demanding stable environment.
How does ripstop work?
As the name suggests, the purpose of ripstop is to stop tears before they spread. If you accidentally catch your jacket on a hook or a sharp branch and a small hole occurs, the reinforced threads in the grid pattern act as a barrier that prevents the tear from growing. The garment also becomes easier to repair if damage does occur.
In practice, ripstop means that:
Tears are contained: The grid structure prevents the tear from spreading across the fabric.
The membrane is protected: By stopping the tear in the outer fabric, the underlying membrane remains shielded, preserving the garment’s windproof and waterproof performance.
The garment can be repaired: A small, contained tear is far easier to fix than a long tear that has spread.
This ensures that your riding clothes retains its functionality and continues to protect you from wind and rain, even after tough days in the stable.
Nordic: Features Designed for Stable Life and Riding
In the Nordic collection, we use a two-layer ripstop fabric made from polyamide with a glossy surface. The smooth, glossy finish makes dirt easier to brush off, which is ideal for everyday stable use. The fabric is lightweight yet highly resistant to mechanical wear and tear.
With a water column rating (WP) of 3000 mm and a breathability rating (MP) of 3000 g, this riding coat keeps you comfortably warm during cold, active days in the stable.
Warmth: 9/10
Breathability: 7/10
Water resistance: 4/10

Ice: For Active Riders – Warmth Without Overheating
Garments in our popular Ice family are designed to withstand both cold temperatures and precipitation, making them a favourite for an active lifestyle in the stable as well as in the saddle. The outer fabric is a bonded two-layer polyester with ripstop for enhanced durability.
With an integrated TPU membrane (WP 7000 mm / MP 5000 g) and a Bionic Finish ECO water-repellent treatment, your riding jacket maintains its strength and performance even under demanding conditions.
Warmth: 8/10
Breathability: 7/10
