Get to Know Johan Untersteiner

Harness racing trainer and driver Johan Untersteiner runs Untersteiner Racing AB in Halmstad, one of Sweden’s largest harness racing stables with around 200 horses in training and approximately 30 employees. The operation started in 2014 with eight horses in training and has since grown steadily alongside its success.

Before taking out his own trainer’s license, Johan worked in Stockholm for eleven years, first at Menhammar with Stefan Hultman and later as first trainer for Roger Walmann. He describes those years as important both for gaining racing experience and for developing his philosophy as a trainer.

What motivates you?

– What motivates me the most about running a harness racing stable is the pursuit of the ultimate racehorse. Getting new yearlings every year, working with different types of individuals and trying to bring out the best in each one. It’s not always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding!
