Fredrik is one of our first ambassadors who has been with us since we started our Uhip Dog project. Fredrik has his own business where he holds courses, among other things. We have asked Fredrik some questions so that you can get to know him better.
Tell us a little about yourself
My name is Fredrik Karlsson and I am born and raised in Skåne, in southern Sweden, who is now stuck up in Roslagen. Here I run my company StarDex Hundkunskap where I help dog owners to reach their goals both in everyday life and on the competition track. I am passionate about all forms of learning and have difficulty sticking to just one thing. I also have another business where I train in canoeing and outdoor life.
WHICH TYPES OF DOG SPORTS DO YOU PERFORM?
I like to test most things but competitively I am and have been most active in Rally Obedience and Nose Work. Then the plan is to also get out even more in competition obedience with the newest addition here at home.
WHAT DOES A NORMAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
The mornings consist mainly of administrative work and training my own dogs. Then in the afternoon and evening, courses and private lessons start and then it rolls on like that.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT IN DOGS?
Hard to say as many achievements are difficult to compare and rank after what is the greatest. Something I am proud of is the consistency of the two dogs I have taken out to compete in Nose Work, both of which have taken their three diplomas in three possible competitions. But I am at least as proud to see when one of my teams I coach succeeds and develops!
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR SPORT?
I love basic training and getting to see how the task really hits the dogs brain, and they understand what to do. To build stable foundations both in everyday life and in competition. That is often why I bounce rounds among different branches or whims I get.
What are your top tips for someone struggling with Nose Work?
My most important step is to think through your starts! Make sure the dog is in the frame of mind you want it to be in before you start and don't start the dog before you know it knows what to do. It doesn't always come naturally so think about what you want and what suits your dog and start practicing starts!
WHAT ARE YOUR VISIONS AND DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE?
To continue to develop as a dog trainer and gain more experience in even more disciplines and continue to develop my business to reach even more people around the country.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PRODUCTS FROM UHIP?
Zip pants - Worth their weight in gold throughout the cold part of the year when you are out and about. Easy to pull over the pants I already wear and keeps me both warm and dry in almost any weather! They are also with me as camp pants when I'm out paddling or as ski pants when I go slalom.
Reward bag Buster - Have several pieces to always be able to pull on one as soon as I go to train. Perfect size to easily be able to put your hand down and grab rewards while it fits so well that you can move freely without it interfering. A must for anyone who does not want their treats in their pockets!
